Slim, wide or woven

A slim leather belt threads through the loops of tailored pants and disappears into the outfit, which is what you want under a tucked shirt. How to wear a belt to work

With work pants, match the belt to your shoes and keep the buckle small. With a work dress, belt the natural waist and let the skirt fall from there; a midi dress with a belt looks more finished than one without. Over a long cardigan or a blazer, a belt turns loose layering into a deliberate silhouette. Keep the buckle metal in the same family as your jewellery.

Sizing a belt

Choose a belt by where you plan to wear it. A belt for pant loops is measured at the hip, and one for dresses and blazers at the waist, which is usually a size smaller. Adjustable belts remove the guesswork if you want one belt to do both jobs.
